1. Keep the Wheels Rolling Smoothly
The wheels of your stroller are bound to pick up dust, mud, gravel, and even sand over time. To ensure they stay in good condition and provide a smooth ride, give them a regular cleaning:
- How to clean: Every couple of weeks (or after a particularly dirty adventure), remove the wheels if possible and rinse them with warm, to remove grime and debris.
- Dry and lubricate: After washing, make sure the wheels are thoroughly dry before reattaching. Apply a small amount of stroller-safe lubricant to the wheel axles and moving parts. This helps reduce wear and keeps the wheels rolling easily, preventing squeaks and stiff turns.
2. Lubricate Moving Parts for Longevity
Just like a bike, a stroller has various moving parts that benefit from occasional lubrication. Over time, dirt and regular use can cause the frame’s joints and other components to wear or stiffen up.
- Where to lubricate: Focus on the joints, wheel axles, and any parts that fold or rotate. Avoid using too much lubricant—just a drop or two on each joint will suffice.
- Which lubricant to use: Opt for a stroller-friendly lubricant or silicone-based spray, avoiding WD-40 and similar products that might attract dirt and cause clogging. They can also dry out and wash off quickly
3. Wash Fabrics to Keep Things Fresh
With constant exposure to the elements, spills, and everyday use, stroller fabrics can collect quite a bit of dirt, food crumbs, and the occasional insect. Cleaning the fabrics regularly will help keep your stroller looking fresh and hygienic.
- Spot clean regularly: Wipe down any spots or stains with a damp cloth to prevent them from setting.
- Deep clean when needed: Remove any detachable fabric like the footmuff and place on a 30 degree wash. Do not tumble dry.
4. Inspect Brakes, Buckles, and Fasteners
While cleaning, take a moment to check that all the brakes, buckles, and fasteners are working properly. These are essential for your stroller’s safety.
- Test the brakes: Engage and release the brakes to ensure they lock securely.
- Check buckles and fasteners: Inspect straps, buckles, and fasteners for any signs of wear. Make sure they latch and unlatch smoothly and securely.
5. Protect It from the Elements
Whenever possible, keep your stroller indoors or under cover when not in use. Prolonged exposure to sun, rain, and snow can wear down fabrics, fade colours, and potentially weaken the frame.
- Cover when not in use: Use a weather-resistant cover if you need to leave your stroller outside for any period.
- Store indoors: Ideally, keep your stroller inside or in a shaded area when not in use, especially overnight or during inclement weather.
A Well-Maintained Stroller for a Smooth Ride
By keeping your stroller clean, lubricated, and properly cared for, you’ll enjoy a smoother, safer ride for both you and your child. Not only will regular maintenance keep your stroller looking its best, but it will also extend its life, giving you peace of mind and more time to make memories with your little one.
